One of the classis and undying hobbies all over the world today is skating and the most popular that is most loved by many, both young and old alike, is rollerblading and although it is the most popular of all skating activities, many are not aware about the history of rollerblading.
Rollerblading actually traces its origins from roller skating, which initially was used both for recreation and transportation.
The history of roller skating go as far back as the mid 1700s where the first recorded use of the roller skates was in a London stage performance back in 1743, unfortunately, the name of the creator was obscured from history.
In 1760, the first recorded invention of the primate skate made of metal wheels was introduced by John Joseph Merlin and by 1819, a Frenchman named M. Petitbled patented the first roller skate.
Petitblebs design resembled that of an inline skate, only that it was not very maneuverable since the fixed set metal wheels can only travel in a straight line and also felt bumpy since the metal wheels cannot absorb the gravitational pressure between the ground and the rider.
As the 19th century began to be ushered in, several inventors and designers have continued working and developing the design for an ideal roller skate, especially since they were in a more dedicated mood of inventing a more portable and convenient transportation vehicle.
A significant breakthrough was finally made in 1863 as the quad skate, or a four wheeled turning roller skate was introduced and by New Yorker James Leonard Plimpton.
Plimptons invention significantly improved from previous designs by incorporating practical yet mechanical processes that would radically change the way people knew about the roller skates and one that could finally catch the attention of many, young and old alike.
Plimptons design contained a pivoting base attached to the skates wheel housing using a rubber cushion that allowed the rider to manage a curve by leaning towards one side, which means that as the skater travels forward, all the skater needs to do is lean to the right allow the vehicle to turn right and vice versa.
The design caught public attention and much excitement was generated that the in 1866, the first public skating rink was opened in Newport, Rhode Island.
Plimptons quad skate, because of its maneuverability, became more popular and dominated the industry for more than a century.
And in the 1979, two enterprising brothers Scott and Brennan Olson, chanced upon a pair of inline skates back from the 1960s made by the Chicago Roller Skate Company and saw it as a potentially good alternative for off ice hockey training, outfitted the skates with ice hockey boots and so began the all-time skating favorite the Rollerblades.
So goes the history of rollerblading and how it first evolved from its humble beginnings into what it is today that has captured the hearts and hobbies of millions around the world.
