Two important things when starting rock collecting at a young age

Rock collecting is one of the most common projects that young kids embark on. This is perhaps because of the fact that kids get exposed to the topics of rocks in their science subject and are further exposed to it during science experiments and field trips.

Though there are a lot of kids who get into rock collecting, only a few manages to actually complete a collection or to continue with the collection even after the initial interest have passed. Oftentimes, the lust for a new form of rock will disappear along with the science topic or the next school year. Still, there are some who manages to really build an enviable collection.

Sometimes, the reason why kids do not continue with their collections is not because of the lack of interest but in the lack of preparation. Rock collecting is not as simple as it sounds. It involves a lot of work and it can get really complicated as you make progress with your collection. In fact, if you are not really as seriously into it as you think you are, better look for other collections as you may encounter a lot of problems in this collection. This is especially true if you are still young.

Here are two the things that you will have to take into consideration when starting a rock collection as a kid.

1. Interest
You have go to really want it bad. There are many problems that you will encounter while completing your rock collection. You will need a place where you can keep them on display or store them so that they will not break or fall off. You will need a special case that will protect them and preserve their physical make-up as time pass by. You will need plenty of opportunity to go out and look for samples. In short, it can be a lot of work and without having the real interest, it can eventually be a frustrating and tiring work for you. Not to mention a time consuming one.

2. Support of the parents
This is very important especially if you want to start the collection as soon as possible and get it to be displayed in your room or inside the house. Having your parents by your side will also allow you to go out and look for samples in forests and riverbanks. They can even help you with identifying the different rock samples as well as finance your collection by providing you with books on rocks and display cases.
