Rock collecting may be something that a kid can do but this does not mean that it is easy to do or you can just take the preparations for granted. In fact, rock collecting can be pretty complicated once you really get to know the different kinds of rocks.  There are probably thousands that you have not  yet heard of besides the usual types that you read in Science books in schools. The secret to having a great collection is to make sure that you start fully prepared and aware of the work involved in creating a collection.

Below are some of the essentials in starting a rock collecting. Although you can basically start your collection without doing or getting some of them, all these items and tasks are still pretty important during the course of your collection that is if you want to rock it, pun intended!

1. Knowledge
Without really knowing anything about rocks, how  do you propose to start a collection. Perhaps the most important and the be all and end all of a rock collection is the knowledge about rocks. This is the reason why most people who collect rocks are those who have gotten the habit from their science field trip or science project. Being familiar with rocks is a precursor to a collection.

Don’t get it wrong. You don’t have to be an expert to start a collection. But at least make sure that you have a working knowledge of the field and have a basic understanding of rocks. The rest of the information, you will probably get as you add to your  collection and read up on other literature.

2. Outdoor trips
There is no way you can get rocks for your collection if you live in the city and have no way of going out of town or go on outdoor trips. If this is the kind of lifestyle that you lead, then rock collecting is  not the hobby for you. Remember that rocks can often be found along river side’s and beaches as well as at the foot of mountains and in the middle of forests. If you do not have access to these places, it might be better to look for another hobby.

3. Interest
Rock collecting can be pretty tiring. Just imagine scouring the countryside for that unique piece of rock. If you do not  have the interest then don’t continue. Find another one that  you will enjoy doing.
