One of the most common hobby that kids love to do is rock collecting. With their boundless energy, kids enjoy going outdoors and picking different kinds of rocks along the way. This is especially true for those who live near swamps and forests where different kinds of rocks can be found.

Starting a rock collection can be difficult too, not just in finding rocks for your collection but also in finding ways to display them without damaging them. Remember that though rocks are hard, they can easily break when they fall down. Another difficulty that most collectors encounter is how to clean the rocks before and after collecting them.

If you really want to start rock collecting, no difficulty is insurmountable. Here are some tips that can help you get a head start. Read on and you might find a solution to some of the dilemmas that you have encountered.

1. Read up on rocks
You don’t just add any rock to your collection. If you do that, your room will be filled with rocks that you don’t even know. A good way to start a rock collection is to read as much as you can about rocks and see what are good to collect and what are just commonly found.
By reading up, you will be able to familiarize yourself with rocks that you should be adding to collection and where you can find them. Some rocks can be found in forests while others are found near rivers and bodies of water.

2. Clean it up
Before you display the rocks that you picked up from your recent trip, clean it up first. There is no harm in removing the dirt and grime. After all, you are not really destroying the physical make up of the wrong nor the chemical composition. If you really want to be sure of it, you can use only water and forgo with adding chemicals like soap. Just make sure that you have washed it first. Bringing in rocks that have not been washed can also put the other rocks in your collection at risk.

3. Set up a place
If you are really serious about rock collecting, what you can do is to find a place where you can keep them and display them. Some people keep their rock collection in glass display cases while others put them au natural in shelves. Whichever way you want it, make sure that they are safe and not in any danger of falling off.
