Ferrets are very social, love to be handled, and require an ample amount of time outside it’s cage for exercise. They also love to chew and swallow just about anything. With their flexible bodies, they can fit through very small openings and enclosed spaces. In other words, a ferret that is outside it’s cage can either escape from your view or destroy things around your house. Therefore, if you are planning to bring home a ferret as a pet, make sure that you have done some initial ferret-proofing (this includes ensuring that the ferret’s cage is secured to prevent any possible escape). Here are some ideas if you want to get into ferret-proofing:

Secure rooms
It is a good idea to have a small area or small room in your house completely secured. In here you will place the ferret’s cage. This will also be the place where your ferret will play. It is important to secure a small area since larger rooms like living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms are harder to ferret-proof. Make sure that the house is completely secured to prevent escape. Ferrets have the ability to get through window screens and small spaces including under doors, dryer vents, and plumbing.

Don’t forget the furniture
Completely seal any openings of couches, chairs, mattresses, and other furniture. Ferrets love to get under and climb up into the inner workings. Recliners are dangerous for ferrets. The mechanisms of recliners can cause severe injuries. Ferrets can also get through cushions so check before you sit down.

Appliance
This is the reason why you have to secure one room in your house. Ferrets can easily get underneath or inside home appliances. Washing machines, television sets, ovens and other electronic appliances pose danger to the pet especially when it is turned on. If the ferret chews on any of these electrical appliances while working, they can get electrocuted. Make sure that there are no openings on any appliances you have inside the house.

What goes in doesn’t necessarily comes out
Watch out for the things your ferret eats. One of the most common medical problems concerning ferrets is blockage in the digestive system. As ferrets love to chew and swallow things like soft rubber toys, foams, fabrics, plastics, erasers, etc., they are very prone to indigestion. Moreover, make sure that you don’t allow your pet to swallow toxic substances such as cleansers, chemicals, medications and other poisonous solutions.
