Even if you do not have the luxury of a good backyard, that doesn’t mean you have to skip owning a pet. Exotic caged pets are your best option since they are small, generally quiet, and don’t need to go for a walk. There are, however, some regulations about pet ownership in an apartment building, though you may get an exemption if you put your request into writing (do not attempt to sneak in your pet). Once you are all clear, choose from the following:
Rats
Rats are easily tamed. They are very sociable, friendly, and responsive. They like to hang out on people’s shoulders, laps and arms. Rats require a fairly large cage where they can play around. They are nocturnal.
Rabbits
Like rats, rabbits are very sociable but they don’t like to be held although they are happy near humans. They also need a fairly large cage. They can stay inside the cage most of the time but since they can be litter trained, rabbits can roam around the house without causing any problem. Take note though that they like to chew and dig so some training and rabbit proofing may be required to keep these behaviors from causing any property damage.
Hamsters, Guinea Pigs and Gerbils
Hamsters, guinea pigs and gerbils are all sociable pets. They are easily tamed and easily handled. Hamsters can live in a small cage or space. Guinea pigs and gerbils on the other hand require a fairly large cage. Hamsters and gerbils are more active during the night. Meanwhile, guinea pigs may not be as loud but they produce a “wheezing” noise especially when they are in search of food.
Mice and Degus
Mice and degus are social and easily tamed. They are both good for small spaces even if they live in pairs or groups. Mice do not need exercise outside especially if the cage is well equipped with accessories and toys. Mice do not need a lot of attention especially if they live in groups. Degus on the other hand require plenty of opportunity to exercise.
Tarantulas
Tarantulas are easy to care for, require very little space, quiet, clean and a good choice for those who want something different.
Snakes
While many snakes are venomous, there are some that can be kept as pets (e.g. corn snake, milk snakes, king snakes, and ball pythons). They can be placed in a cage but a tank is more recommended.
