Our feathered companion should not have to complain to us to get what they need (not exactly the reason why they can’t speak our language). It is second nature that as owners, we make sure that we keep our pets happy in their home. That is why it is not surprising that we tend to buy any bird accessories we can find. The problem is, not all bird products are as useful and safe as manufacturers claim. If we make bad choices, our purchase may do more harm than good. To keep your bird safe, note these following items and leave them on the shelf on your next visit to the pet store.
.Corn Cob Cage Liner is used to cover the floor of small animal cages and keep it clean. It is made from tiny bits of Styrofoam-like balls that when ingested, can cause intestinal problems. Corn cob also has the tendency to swell when it comes into contact with liquid. To be safe, use bird-safe cage liner.
.Mite Protectors are those that are hung on the bars of the cage that serve to protect the birds from being attacked by parasites. However, they can present dangers to your bird as they emit a fume that can result in respiratory distress. Note that many well-cared for birds never have a mite problem so it is not a must to buy mite protectors. When you suspect infestation, calling your vet is still the best option.
.Cement Perches are products that promise to trim the bird’s nails automatically. This sounds great especially if you don’t know how to manually trim your bird’s nails or if you don’t have the time to groom your pet on a regular basis. But cement perches can leave abrasions on the bottom of the feet if your bird constantly steps on it. This may result in bleeding, soreness or even infection.
.Swinging Chains are a nice addition to a bird’s home but beware. Bird’s toes or beak can easily get caught between the links which can result in injury. Instead of chains, opt for woven ropes. Make sure though that your pet doesn’t ingest the threads or get trapped in a worn spot. Vines are still the best option.
.Split Ring Attachments are another nice addition a bird’s home but they must be securely fastened to the cage. Avoid split ring key chain type attachments though. A bird’s toes, beak, or even tongue might get caught between the rings.
