It is vital, therefore, that you choose the most appropriate bedding to keep your pet happy and comfortable. You have a wide variety of bedding material options.

Preferred Cage Bedding Choices

Aspen shavings- have always been the most recommended bedding material for caged animals. Since aspen is hardwood, it does not emit any toxic phenols, making it safe even for small pets. The only problem is that shavings are difficult to clean.

Paper Pulp- looks like a gray egg carton that has been shredded. Some pet supply manufacturers produce beddings made from paper pulp. The main complaint with this type is the unpleasant odor it emits, especially when wet.

Shredded paper- is a cheap and Continue reading Caged Pet Bedding Options

It is second nature that as owners, we make sure that we keep our pets happy in their home. That is why it is not surprising that we tend to buy any bird accessories we can find. The problem is, not all bird products are as useful and safe as manufacturers claim. If we make bad choices, our purchase may do more harm than good. To keep your bird safe, note these following items and leave them on the shelf on your next visit to the pet store.

1.Corn Cob Cage Liner is used to cover the floor of small animal cages and keep it Continue reading Cage Accessories You Must Avoid

They require small space and can live quite well inside a terrarium without being bothered. However, this simple creature requires special care. And just like other household pets, basic needs should be provided.

Housing
Tarantulas are probably the least demanding of all exotic pets in terms of space since they can live in a small enclosure. Most species live 90% of their time hidden in tree hollows or snug borrows waiting for night fall, so there is no need to provide them with a large space. There is no strict rule on the size of it's house but a shoebox-size is often large enough. Also a small enclosure allows you to monitor and feed your pet properly as it allows you to remove Continue reading Basic Tarantula Care

The lifespan of this creature averages at about 15 years old and they can live for as long as 22 years.

Origin
Chinchillas are found in the Andes regions in South America. However, due to their depleting number, they are hard to find even in their natural habitat. They were hunted down excessively during the early parts of the century for their soft coats.

Description
Chinchillas have a grey coat with black hair tips. The average male weighs around half a kilo while a female weighs anywhere between 600 to 800 grams.

Behavior
Chinchillas are, by nature, nocturnal and they are most active from dusk until dawn. Therefore, it is natural for them to sleep during the day Continue reading Basic Information About Chinchillas

While there is nothing wrong with owning a pet, there is more to it than just passing by a pet store, pointing your finger at a cuddly pet you saw through the window, paying at the counter and going home. Choosing a pet involves careful considerations. You have thing to think of such things as your kids, lifestyle, money, time, and space.

How old are your children? The type of pet you want to bring into your house depends on the age of your children. Most would say that you should own a pet when your youngest is already 6 years old. This may be true for most pets like dogs and cats. For a much younger child Continue reading Basic Considerations when Choosing a Caged Family Pet

It is always safest to buy from hobbyist breeders or private breeders as you can be assured that their pets are healthy and are most times problem-free. Also buyers can acquire essential information about the background of the hamster, the type of breeding method used and the condition of their quarters prior to sale.

Private breeders also make it a point to breed hamsters under careful planning as they normally extract one or two hamsters for themselves to continue the line of hamsters with the best quality, temperament and health. Therefore buyers are assured that the hamsters from these suppliers are properly bred and of high quality. On top of this, private breeders have Continue reading Where to Buy a Hamster

Like their distant cousins, gerbils are quite small and have large front incisors used mainly for gnawing. There are many species of gerbils but the most popular among pet owners is the Mongolian gerbil.

How to distinguish gerbils from the rest of the rodent family?
It is a common case for the untrained eye to identify a gerbil as a rat or a mouse. This is because of the close resemblance in the shape of the head and the general features of the body. However, the most prominent feature that distinguishes a gerbil from other rodent species is their hairy tail that often has a tuft of hairs at the tip.

Gerbil care
Gerbils are very curious creatures, both Continue reading What You Should Know About Gerbils as Pets

Some pets eat commercially available pellets, some eat insects, others eat small animals, and some just eat fruits and vegetables. As a beginner, a pet's diet can get a little confusing. As an expert owner of multiple types of animals, everything should be planned so that the meal of one does not go to the other.

Cats and dogs- Since these two animals are the most popular and common house pets, finding food for them is not hard. Cat food and dog food are available at any supermarket and pet stores. Both can and will eat the type of food humans eat but just as you care for yourself, moderation should always be observed.

Birds- Many pet shops recommend feeding pet birds with Continue reading What Should I Feed My Pet?

Whether it is homemade or bought from a shop, a gerbil cage must be properly secured and regularly sanitized.

Choose a well-constructed cage. There are several choices when it comes to gerbil cages, plastic/wire cages, metal cages, aquariums and homemade cages. The combination of a plastic and metal wire cage is probably the most ideal choice for gerbils. These animals are fond of gnawing which is why it is important to use materials that cannot easily give in to constant gnawing such as those made entirely of wood. The base of the cage must be plastic and the top covering should be made of wire mesh.

Consider the height. A gerbil cage must not be shallow Continue reading Tips on Selecting a Good Gerbil Cage
